About This Footing Rebar Calculator

Continuous footings under walls are usually reinforced with two or more horizontal bars running the full length. Rebar comes in stock lengths, so long runs need overlapping lap splices, and every lap adds bar. This tool counts the stock bars for each run, adds the laps, and optionally adds cross bars across the width.

Bars are held 3 inches inside the concrete at the ends and sides, the minimum cover for concrete cast against earth. The lap defaults to 40 bar diameters, a common spec (20 inches for #4 bar), but your plans or engineer set the actual lap, so change it to match. Corner and intersection bends are not included.

Need the concrete too? The concrete footing calculator sizes the pour and forms, and the foundation load calculator checks the footing width.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Add up the total length of every footing run, in feet.
  2. Enter the footing width in inches.
  3. Enter how many horizontal bars run the length (two is typical for a house footing).
  4. Enter the bar size and the lap length from your plans.
  5. Add a cross bar spacing if your plans call for transverse bars.
Frequently Asked Questions

How much rebar do I need for a footing?

Multiply the footing length by the number of horizontal bars, then add one lap splice for every joint between stock bars. A 60 ft footing with two runs of #4 bar in 20 ft lengths needs 4 bars per run with 20 inch laps, 8 bars in total.

How long should a rebar lap splice be?

Lap length is set by your plans or engineer. 40 bar diameters is a common rule of thumb, which is 20 inches for #4 bar and 25 inches for #5 bar.

How much concrete cover does footing rebar need?

Concrete cast directly against the earth needs 3 inches of cover under ACI 318, so footing bars sit on chairs or dobies 3 inches off the soil and 3 inches in from the sides and ends.

How much does #4 rebar weigh?

#4 rebar (1/2 inch) weighs 0.668 lb per foot, so a 20 ft bar is about 13.4 lbs. #5 is 1.043 lb per foot and #3 is 0.376 lb per foot.
