About This Sonotube Concrete Calculator

A Sonotube (or any cardboard tube form) is a cylinder, so the concrete it holds is pi times the radius squared times the depth. Enter how many tubes, their inside diameter, and how deep you will pour, and this tool returns cubic yards for a ready-mix order and bag counts for premix.

Bag counts use the yields printed on standard premix: 0.60 cu ft for an 80 lb bag, 0.45 cu ft for 60 lb and 0.30 cu ft for 40 lb. Holes are rarely perfect cylinders below the tube, so keep a waste allowance of 10 percent or more.

Not sure what diameter you need? The deck footing size calculator works it out from the load and your soil. For square columns or a footing poured with the piers, use the concrete column calculator.

How to Use This Calculator
  1. Count the tube forms you will pour.
  2. Enter the inside diameter of the tube in inches.
  3. Enter the full pour depth, from the bottom of the hole to the top of the tube.
  4. Keep a 10 percent waste allowance, more if the holes are belled or ragged.
  5. Order ready-mix by the cubic yard, or buy the bag count shown.
Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of concrete do I need for a Sonotube?

A 12 inch tube holds about 0.79 cu ft per foot of depth. A 48 inch deep 12 inch tube is about 3.1 cu ft, which is 6 bags of 80 lb premix. An 8 inch tube 48 inches deep is about 1.4 cu ft, or 3 bags.

How much concrete is in a 10 inch Sonotube?

A 10 inch tube holds about 0.55 cu ft per foot of depth, so a 4 foot pour is about 2.2 cu ft: 4 bags of 80 lb premix.

Should I use bags or ready-mix for Sonotubes?

Bags make sense for a handful of footings. Above about one cubic yard (45 bags of 80 lb mix) a ready-mix truck or a short-load supplier is usually less work and similar cost.

How long are Sonotubes?

Retail tube forms are usually sold in 4 foot lengths and can be cut with a handsaw. Deeper holes need a second section or a longer special-order tube.
